Waters Corp. (WAT) appointed Medtronic PLC (MDT) executive Christopher J. O'Connell as its new chief executive starting in September.
He succeeds longtime CEO Douglas A. Berthiaume, whose plans to retire from the role were announced nearly two years ago.
A 21-year-veteran of medical-device maker Medtronic, Mr. O'Connell most recently served as president of its restorative therapies group. Separately, Medtronic said Geoff Martha will succeed Mr. O'Connell as head of the restorative therapies group.
In August of 2013, Waters announced that Mr. Berthiaume planned to retire as CEO within 24 months. Mr. Berthiaume was appointed president and CEO in 1994 when the business was separated from Millipore Corp., and assumed the additional role of chairman in 1996. He will remain the company's chairman.
Mr. Martha joined Medtronic in 2011 and currently serves as senior vice president of corporate strategy and business development, global communications and Medtronic Philanthropy. He also serves as the chief integration officer for the Covidien integration.
