BHP Billiton Ltd. and Vale SA became joint venture partners in Samarco Mineração SA in 2000 when Vale acquired a stake. BHP bought its stake in Samarco in 1984. "Samarco May Not Shield BHP, Vale From Brazil Dam-Breach Repercussions -- Update," at 9:40 a.m. EST, misstated in the first paragraph when the companies created the joint venture. The error also appeared in a version published at 8:10 a.m. EST.
