Union Pacific on Wednesday said it has struck a tentative agreement with the union representing roughly 5,600 locomotive engineers that would give the engineers a schedule of 11 days on and four days off.
Union Pacific said the deal would provide its engineers with more predictable schedules while enabling the Omaha, Neb., freight railroad to better manage its staffing levels, supporting more consistent and reliable service.
Engineers are currently on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Union Pacific said it expects to make meaningful progress implementing the new work/rest schedules within a year of ratification, adding that it is still negotiating with the union, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, on the issue of sick time.
A lack of paid sick days nearly led to a nationwide rail strike last year, and railroads have been working to reach agreements on sick time with their unions.
