Union Pacific Achieves Record First-Quarter Employee Safety Rate

OMAHA, Neb., April 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Pacific employees achieved record first-quarter safety performance with a reportable injury rate of 0.85, demonstrating ongoing progress toward the company's ultimate goal of zero incidents.

Union Pacific's safety culture development among its 48,000 employees led to an impressive 23 percent injury rate improvement versus first quarter 2014. A railroad's reportable injury rate is the total number of injuries reportable to the Federal Railroad Administration per 200,000 worker hours, which is equivalent to 100 employees working a full year.

Among other efforts helping to decrease the reportable injury rate, many Union Pacific employees participate in Courage to Care – a personal commitment to provide feedback to fellow employees to fix unsafe situations and to have the courage to accept feedback from coworkers – ensuring everyone goes home safe.
