North American rail traffic rose 15.3% last week, as comparisons remained inflated due to the pandemic-related shutdowns that hit many economic sectors last year, leading to large drops in rail volumes, data from the Association of American Railroads showed.
Carload volume rose 16.2% for the week ended June 12 on a dozen reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads, while intermodal traffic rose 14.5%, the trade group said Wednesday.
In the week ended June 5, North American rail traffic rose 12.2%. For the first 23 weeks of the year, North American rail traffic is up 12.2%.
The AAR said U.S. rail traffic rose 17.9% last week amid a 21.8% jump in carloads and a 14.8% rise in the volume of intermodal containers and trailers. U.S. rail traffic is up 13.7% for the first 23 weeks of the year.
Canadian rail traffic rose 9.3% last week, as carloads rose 4.9% and intermodal units jumped 14.3%. Canadian rail traffic is up 9% for the first 23 weeks of the year.
Mexican rail traffic rose 5.4% last week, with carloads up 2.8% and intermodal units up 9.1%. Mexican rail traffic is up 4.7% for the year to date, the AAR said.
