North American rail traffic fell 4.4% in the week ended Jan. 4, data from the Association of American Railroads showed.
Carload volume for the first week of the year on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads fell 3.3%, while intermodal traffic slid 5.6%, the trade group said.
The AAR last week reported that North American volume fell 4% for the 52 weeks ended Dec. 28.
The AAR said U.S. rail traffic for the first week of 2020 fell 5.1%, with carloads down 2.8% and the volume of intermodal containers and trailers off 7.4%.
Canadian rail traffic rose 1% during the week, as a 4.4% increase in intermodal units more than offset a 1.3% decline in carloads, the AAR data showed.
Mexican rail traffic plunged 18.2% last week, as carloads tumbled 20% and intermodal units fell 16.2%.
