Syniverse
Technologies (NYSE: SVR), a leading provider of technology and
business solutions for the global telecommunications industry, announced
today that Infocomm
Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has appointed Syniverse as
the country’s only number portability
centralized database administrator. Syniverse will be awarded the
license to provide number portability solutions to Singapore’s
telecommunications operators, and will establish number portability
service agreements with all of Singapore’s
telecom providers.
The license will allow Syniverse, as an operator-neutral third party, to
administer the database and provide number portability services to
operators for seven years.
The number portability database will facilitate the seamless transfer of
telephone numbers when subscribers wish to keep their numbers but change
service providers between two mobile operators. Also included in the
license is the right to provide number portability services to
fixed-line operators and others, such as VoIP and wireless broadband
operators, should the need arise. Singapore
Computer Systems (SCS), a Singapore-based information and
communications technology service provider, will provide local support
for Syniverse’s number portability solution.
Singapore’s new centralized database is
expected to be in place by the second quarter of 2008, at which time
service providers will be expected to meet the IDA’s
new number portability regulations. According to the IDA, Singapore’s
operators serve more than six million subscribers.
“Singapore has one of the most sophisticated
telecommunications systems in Asia, and Syniverse is honored to have
been chosen by the IDA to provide its telecom operators with even more
robust local number portability services than are already available,”
said Tony Holcombe, President and CEO, Syniverse. “Syniverse
has an excellent track record over many years in building and
maintaining sophisticated systems that interconnect different service
providers’ networks, and we look forward to
providing Singapore’s telecom industry with a
solution that will be efficient and cost-effective for the operators as
well as beneficial for their subscribers.”
Raymond Cheung, Executive Vice President and CEO-Asia Pacific,
Syniverse, said the license award from Singapore strengthens Syniverse’s
position as a global leader in end-to-end number
portability solutions.
“We already provide number portability
services to many operators around the globe, including most mobile
operators in the United States; all mobile operators in Canada and the
United Kingdom; and select operators in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. We
continue to strive to expand Syniverse’s
footprint in this area as more and more countries require their
telecommunications providers to implement number portability solutions,”
said Cheung.
Singapore was one of the first countries to implement number portability
in 1997 and is respected as a leader in providing this valuable service
to subscribers. The move to a centralized database solution further
demonstrates Singapore’s leadership in
providing leading-edge telecommunication services to subscribers across
the industry.
