Sun Life Financial Donates $15,000 to Canadian Red Cross to Assist those Affected by the Ice Storm in New Brunswick

TORONTO, Feb. 8, 2017 /CNW/ - Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada ("Sun Life Financial") today announced that it is donating $15,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to help and provide relief for those affected by the ice storm in New Brunswick.

The recent ice storm brought down hundreds of utility poles and thousands of kilometres of wires, resulting in widespread power outages initially impacting more than 133,000 homes and businesses. The damage is the worst in the northeast part of the province where thousands of people have been left without electricity.

"Many residents and businesses in New Brunswick have been impacted by the ice storm and are facing various challenges," said Léo Grépin, Senior Vice President, Individual Insurance and Wealth, Sun Life Financial Canada. "Our thoughts are with those affected and we will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the proper support is in place for anyone who needs it."

Sun Life Financial's contribution to the Canadian Red Cross will come from the Sun Life Financial International Response Fund at the Canadian Red Cross – the first international corporate sponsorship of its kind – which enables support to be deployed rapidly to areas in need. It was established in partnership with the Canadian Red Cross in 2005 to help accelerate emergency response to large-scale international crises. Administered by the Canadian Red Cross, the Fund has helped provide immediate relief and resources to natural disasters and crises in Canada and around the world.
