Shell said Wednesday it will start maintenance work at its Pernis refinery near Rotterdam in late January.
The U.K.-headquartered oil group said on X, the former Twitter, that the work is expected to be completed in mid-April. Several units will be cleaned, inspected and some parts will be replaced, which may involve flaring at the site.
With a capacity of 404,000 barrels/day, Pernis is the largest oil refinery in Europe.
The upcoming refinery maintenance season in Europe could be more intense than usual because operators may have postponed turnarounds during 2022 and 2023 to take advantage of abnormally high refinery margins.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects refinery runs in Europe (OECD and non-OECD) to seasonally dip to 11.2 million b/d by March, compared with a high of 12.1 million b/d in December 2023.
