Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE will expand a program to provide doses of their Comirnaty Covid-19 vaccine to poor countries at a not-for-profit price, the companies said Wednesday.
Under the program, the two companies provide doses of their vaccine to the U.S. government, which pays them a not-for-profit price and then donates the doses to low- and lower-middle-income countries and support organizations.
Pfizer and BioNTech will expand the program by 500 million doses, bringing its total size to one billion doses.
The companies are planning to produce the doses for the program at Pfizer facilities in Kalamazoo, Mich.; Andover, Mass.; Chesterfield, Mo. and McPherson, Kan. Delivery of the first 500 million doses began in August, and all one billion are expected to be delivered by September 2022.
World-wide, the two companies have now shipped more than 1.5 billion COvid-19 vaccine doses in all, they said.
