ADR Shares End Lower; GlaxoSmithKline Shares Active

International stocks trading in New York closed lower Friday, with the Bank of New York index of American depositary receipts falling 0.2% to 145.69. The European index dropped 0.1% to 146.69, the Asian index fell 0.6% to 138.67, the Latin American index declined 0.4% to 247.49 and the emerging markets index shed 0.2% to 255.92. Among the companies with shares that actively traded was GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK, GSK.LN).

U.K. pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline on Friday said three late-stage studies into a lung disease drug it developed with San Francisco-based Theravance Inc. (THRX) produced positive results. Still, shares slipped 0.2% to $54.23.

India's top court dismissed Nokia Corp.'s (NOK, NOK1V.HE) recent appeal of a lower court order related to a continuing tax dispute that has cast a shadow over the Finnish company's $7.5 billion deal to sell its handset business to Microsoft Corp. (MSFT). Separately, Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reported on its website that Nokia is planning to appoint Rajeev Suri as its next chief executive, citing unnamed Finnish and foreign sources. Nokia shares edged down 0.3% to $7.54.

HSBC Holdings PLC (HSBC, HSBA.LN) on Friday appointed Jonathan Symonds, former chief financial officer of Novartis AG (NVS, NOVN.VX), as chairman of its European retail banking unit HSBC Bank PLC. HSBC shares edged up 0.1% to $49.88.
