Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge won the Berlin Marathon on Sunday, but fell short of a world record after the insoles of his shoes came apart during the race.
Mr. Kipchoge finished the race in 2 hours, four minutes, a personal best time but 63 seconds short of the world record, a goal he had been thinking about prior to taking the starting line in Berlin, according to the race website.
The insoles of Mr. Kipchoge's shoes began to come apart just before the halfway point of the race, according to the IAAF, as the men's field passed that mark in 1:01:53, just a few seconds short of world record pace.
Nike Inc., which sponsors Mr. Kipchoge and made his shoes, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
