Marathon Petroleum Corp. reported an operational snag and above-normal gas emissions at its Galveston Bay refinery complex in Texas.
"What appeared to be an inaccurate CEMS [continuous emissions monitoring system] reading was later discovered to be a burner issue," the refinery said in a statement late Monday to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. "Burner issue was resolved and unit resumed normal operation."
It said the emissions of more than 20,000 pounds of carbon monoxide happened over a three-day period last week, lasting 42 hours total.
In 2018, Marathon merged its Galveston Bay refinery with its nearby Texas City refinery to create one 585,000-barrel-a-day Galveston Bay refinery complex that now ranks as the second-largest refinery in the U.S. after the Saudi Aramco-owned, 600,000 barrel-a-day Motiva Port Arthur refinery.
