McDonald's Corp. (MCD) on Tuesday said it plans to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions related to its restaurants and offices by 36% by 2030, using 2015 as a base year.
The fast-food chain also plans to reduce emissions intensity per metric ton of food and packaging by 31% across its supply chain.
This should prevent 150 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere, the equivalent of taking 32 million passenger cars off the road for a year, the company said.
McDonald's and other well-known food and beverage brands have been trying to cut down on the enormous amounts of waste and emissions they create, as more consumers expect such initiatives.
McDonald's said its efforts will focus on beef production, restaurant energy usage, sourcing, packaging and waste, which together accounts for about 64% of its global emissions. The company previously said it wants all of its locations to recycle food-service packaging by 2025.
McDonald's shares, up 23.5% over the past year, are inactive premarket.
