Kroger Store in Galveston Opens for Business Today HOUSTON, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kroger Co. today announced it is making a $100,000 donation to the Houston Area Ike Relief Fund to help individuals and families recover from this weekend's storm. Houston Mayor Bill White created the fund to help meet local residents' needs in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. "We are working quickly to do our part to help our community and its residents recover from this devastating hurricane," said Bill Breetz, President of the Southwest division of Kroger. "Our contribution to the Houston Area Ike Relief Fund will extend the reach of local organizations and help hurricane victims in immediate need of assistance." Kroger continues to work with Houston officials to get ice and water to residents quickly. At this time, 100 of 113 Kroger stores and 27 fuel centers in Houston are open. In the past three days, Kroger has shipped 350 truckloads of grocery products, 233 truckloads of produce, 164 truckloads of meat, 160 truckloads of ice, 140 truckloads of water, and 62 truckloads of milk to our Houston area stores for our customers. The Kroger store on Seawall Boulevard in Galveston will open this afternoon. A caravan of 12 tractor-trailers is arriving from our distribution center in Houston to replenish the store. The caravan includes three truckloads of water and one truckload of ice that Kroger will give away free to Galveston residents in need. Kroger will also donate 3,000 hot dogs and host a free community cookout at the Galveston store today from 3 to 5 p.m. or until the hot dogs are gone. Many Kroger divisions throughout the U.S. are accepting donations from customers and employees to further support the American Red Cross disaster relief efforts.
