Chinese Bank Employee Falls to Death in Hong Kong

An employee at Chinese bank Industrial Bank Co. died on Tuesday after plunging from a prime building in Hong Kong's financial district.

Hong Kong police said they received a report at 7:17 a.m. Hong Kong time of a 31-year-old man, surnamed Lui, who fell from the Citibank Plaza complex of buildings, located on 3 Garden Road in the city's Central business district. The man was later certified as dead at the scene, police said, adding the investigation was continuing. The Citibank Plaza, which has the offices of several global investment banks and hedge funds, houses two buildings--ICBC Tower and Citibank Tower.

The police didn't specify which building the deceased fell from but described the death as not suspicious. Initial investigations, the police said, suggest that the death could be linked to a "romantic issue, " adding that no suicide note was found. It wasn't immediately clear which floor he jumped from.

Mr. Lui had joined the Hong Kong office of Industrial Bank as an employee this month, a person familiar with the situation said. Industrial Bank is a midsize Chinese lender, in which Hong Kong's Hang Seng Bank Ltd. owns a stake.

The incident follows a string of deaths among finance workers over the past year. In February 2014, an associate at the finance department at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.'s Hong Kong office, died after falling from the roof of the U.S. bank, located in the heart of the city's financial district.

A month before, J.P. Morgan's technology-operations vice president Gabriel Magee fell to his death from the bank's skyscraper in Canary Wharf, one of London's main financial district.
