Xiaomi Gets New CFO

BEIJING—Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Corp. said Wednesday that a former partner of Russian investment firm DST Global has joined it as chief financial officer, its latest hire of a senior executive with an international background.

Shou Zi Chew, a Singaporean, had joined billionaire investor Yuri Milner's DST Global in 2010, and was involved in the company's investments in Xiaomi and other Chinese tech companies, Xiaomi said.

Xiaomi, one of China's leading phone brands, has been adding overseas executives to its team as it looks to expand internationally. The company launched a smartphone in Brazil Tuesday, the first time it has entered a market outside Asia.

"Shou Zi was a successful investor with unique investment insights and financial skills, who recognized Xiaomi's value early on and helped DST complete its investment in the company," said Lei Jun, Xiaomi's founder and chairman, in the statement.

The Chinese firm made waves in 2013 when it hired one of Google Inc.'s top Android executives, Hugo Barra, as its global vice president. Xiaomi last month hired Qualcomm Inc.'s Greater China President Wang Xiang to lead strategic co-operation.

Before DST Global, Mr. Chew worked at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. He graduated from the University College London with a bachelor's degree in economics in 2006, and received an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 2010, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Xiaomi's previous CFO, Yu Ming-to, had come from Taiwanese chip maker Mediatek Inc. and left around two years ago for personal reasons, a company spokeswoman said. The CFO post had been unfilled since.
