Teck Resources Ltd. said that it will deploy 30 of Caterpillar Inc.'s zero-emissions large haul trucks at its mining operations.
On Wednesday, the Canadian mining company said that the agreement with Caterpillar is part of its commitment to decarbonize its working fleet of vehicles, reducing scope 1 emissions -- emissions caused directly from its operations and activities.
The two companies plan to move forward through a multi-phased approach that includes early development, piloting and deployment of the 30 zero-emission vehicles, with an initial deployment at Teck's Elk Valley steelmaking coal operations in British Columbia.
Teck has set a target to reduce the carbon-intensity of its operations by 33% by 2030 and then to become a carbon-neutral operator by 2050.
"Decarbonizing our haul truck fleet is a critical step forward on our road to carbon neutrality and we are pleased to collaborate with Caterpillar to advance this work," Teck President and Chief Executive Don Lindsay said.
