BWX Technologies Inc. on Monday said it won a $45 billion contract from the U.S. Department of Energy to clean up the Hanford nuclear weapons production site over the next decade.

The Lynchburg, Va.-based, supplier of nuclear products said the Hanford Integrated Tank Disposition Contract is the largest in the company's history. It was awarded to Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure, LLC, which is a joint venture led by a BWX Technologies subsidiary. Also a part of the venture are subsidiaries of Amentum and Fluor, BWX Technologies said.

The energy department said the venture is in charge of cleaning up more than 40 years of plutonium production that took place through the 1980s at the site, which is near Richland, Wash. The energy department also said it is now transforming the site back into an operations mode to treat tank waste from the production era.

The scope of the contract includes operation of the Hanford tank farm facilities, and eventual operation of the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant, BWX said. It also entails responsibility for project management, security and emergency services, business performance, and environment, safety, health and quality.

"Our team is honored to take on the largest and most complex radioactive waste cleanup project in the United States," said Heatherly Dukes, president of BWX Technology's Technical Services Group.

Shares of BWX Technologies were up 1.5% to $65 in after-hours trading.
