Designated a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the lightship’s navigational light beacon, foghorn and on-board electrical systems were restored through a $250,000 grant from American Express
WHAT: American Express (NYSE:AXP) provided a $250,000 grant to the National Trust for Historic Preservation to restore Boston's Historic Nantucket Lightship/LV-112. A key symbol of our nation’s maritime heritage, the Nantucket Lightship was known as the “Statue of Liberty of the Sea;” the last landmark seen by vessels departing the United States; and the first beacon seen by many immigrants entering U.S. waters when it was anchored near the dangerous Nantucket Shoals from 1936 to 1975.
WHEN: Friday, August 7 – On National Lighthouse Day, the restoration will be unveiled to the public.
WHERE: The ship is located at the Boston Harbor Shipyard & Marina, 256 Marginal St., East Boston.
WHO: Representatives from the U.S Lightship Museum, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express will be available for interviews to discuss the preservation of the historic lightship and other endangered places across Boston and the United States.
WHY: American Express supports the restoration of historic places, like the Nantucket Lightship/LV-112, as they promote a sense of national and local identity and play an important role in attracting visitors and revitalizing neighborhoods. By becoming the Presenting Partner of the Trust’s National Treasures program, American Express is contributing vital support to save America’s historic places as well as directly addressing the needs of certain National Treasures through preservation grants.
American Express also partnered with the National Trust for Historic Preservation on Partners in Preservation, a successful partnership that awarded more than $10 million in preservation grants to historic places across the country and engaged more than a million people through online voting, Since the conclusion of the program, American Express has turned its attention to the historic buildings, landscapes, and communities that face imminent threats across the country like the LV-112.
