American Express CEO Says Employees Can Work From Home for Rest of 2020

American Express Co.'s 64,000 employees can work from home through the end of the year, Chief Executive Stephen Squeri said Monday.

The work environment will be "completely different" when offices reopen, Mr. Squeri said. Employees should think of the office as an alternative workspace when they reopen, which likely won't be for at least several more months in most places, he said.

"If you can work from home and you do not want to come in, you do not have to come in," Mr. Squeri said. "In fact, if you can work from home effectively, you should plan on doing so for the rest of the year."

The return to the company's offices will be staggered. Offices will reopen at about 10% capacity to start, depending on the number of cases in an area, transportation options and government guidance. Employees will arrive and depart at scheduled times and will be required to wear masks or other facial coverings when entering and traveling within the company's offices.

American Express employs people in more than 40 countries. Its New York headquarters has been closed since mid-March.
