T-Mobile US Inc. on Wednesday said hackers stole personal information on nearly 49 million current and prospective customers during a cyberattack on its database.
The nation's second-largest wireless network operator said some of the data accessed included customer names, Social Security and driver's license numbers, and birth dates, but it stressed that no financial information was taken.
T-Mobile said those affected include about 7.8 million current postpaid customers, along with just over 40 million former or prospective customers who had previously applied for credit with the Bellevue, Wash., company. Data on some 850,000 active prepaid customers was also exposed.
T-Mobile said it is offering two years of free identity-protection services to those affected by the cyberattack, adding that it has closed the access point it believes the hackers used to gain entry to its servers.
The company said its investigation into the breach is still underway.
