Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said a misconfiguration of an internal customer support database led to exposure of certain data.
The company said its investigation "found no malicious use" and said "most customers did not have personally identifiable information exposed."
Microsoft said a change made to the database's network security group on Dec. 5 contained misconfigured security rules. Engineers remediated the configuration on Dec. 31, the company said.
Microsoft said "the vast majority of records were cleared of personal information in accordance with our standard practices."
