The opening statements from Democrats and Republicans set the tone for a likely theme: A lot of sympathy for Frances Haugen's perspective, and virtually none for Facebook's.
"I'm willing to predict that this [hearing] will have almost 100% attendance," Sen. Roger Wicker (R., Miss.), the ranking Republican on the full Senate Commerce Committee, told Ms. Haugen. He thanked her for coming forward.
"We are all in agreement here for expressing our gratitude and our admiration," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D., Conn.), the chairman of the Commerce subcommittee that's holding Tuesday's hearing.
"Facebook knows its products can be addicting and toxic to children," Mr. Blumenthal said and called on Facebook Inc. founder Mark Zuckerberg to appear before Congress to testify.
