Facebook Inc. (FB) said it will remove over 5,000 targeting options to help prevent discriminatory advertising.
Last week, the Department of Housing and Urban Development brought a complaint against the company, alleging that housing ads could target specific demographic groups in violation of the Fair Housing Act.
HUD's complaint said advertisers could choose to show ads by gender, or exclude users interested in an "assistance dog" or "mobility scooter," or exclude certain zip codes.
On Tuesday, Facebook said on its website that while targeting options "have been used in legitimate ways to reach people interested in a certain product or service, we think minimizing the risk of abuse is more important. This includes limiting the ability for advertisers to exclude audiences that relate to attributes such as ethnicity or religion."
