Intel Corp. set out plans to build a new semiconductor assembly and test facility in Poland with an investment of up to $4.6 billion, a move the company says will help meet growing demand in coming years.
The chip maker said Friday that design and planning for the new facility would begin immediately, with construction starting once approved by the European Commission, the European Union's executive arm. The new facility near Wroclaw will create some 2,000 Intel jobs and thousands more in the supply chain, Intel said.
Intel Chief Executive Pat Gelsinger said Poland is very cost-competitive compared with other manufacturing locations. "Poland is already home to Intel operations and is well positioned to work with Intel sites in Germany and Ireland," he said.
The group has a wafer fabrication facility in Leixlip, Ireland, and has planned a similar plant in Magdeburg, Germany.
