The Federal Trade Commission is negotiating with Google Inc. (GOOG) over the size of a fine the Internet search giant will have to pay for allegedly breaching Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) browser, Bloomberg News reported Friday, citing a person familiar with the matter.
The FTC is getting ready to claim that Google violated the terms of a consent decree last year when it planted "cookies" on Safari, the Apple browser, violating privacy settings, Bloomberg reported.
The fine, which could be tens of millions of dollars, would be the first such action by the FTC over a violation of privacy safeguards on the Internet, according to Bloomberg's report.
A spokeswoman for the FTC declined to comment.
