Rep. Yvette Clarke (D., N.Y.) raised another concern that has been lurking for the social-media platforms -- their systems' ability to help advertisers target online audiences in ways that might unfairly discriminate against minorities and others.
One concern has been the targeting of housing ads in ways that discriminate against minorities.
She's pushing legislation to address the issue, which persists despite efforts by the companies to restrict their advertisers' ability to target unfairly.
"The longer we delay in this, the more the systems that you have created bake discrimination into the algorithms," she said. She said it's critical the companies do more to "undo a lot of the harm that has been created with the bias that has been baked into your systems."
