North American rail traffic fell 8.1% in the week ended Jan. 11, extending a slow start to the year, data from the Association of American Railroads showed.
Carload volume for the week on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads slid 8.5%, while intermodal traffic fell 7.7%, the trade group said.
North American rail traffic was down 4.4% in the week ended Jan. 4. For the two weeks ended Jan. 11, North American volume is down 6.4%, the AAR reported.
The AAR said U.S. rail traffic fell 9.6% last week, as carloads tumbled 10.1% and the volume of intermodal containers and trailers fell 9.1%. U.S. rail traffic is down 7.6% for the first two weeks of the year.
Canadian rail traffic fell 5.2% last week, with carloads down 6.3% and intermodal units off 3.9%, the AAR data showed.
Mexican rail traffic rose 1.9% for the week, as a 3.8% increase in carloads more than offset a 0.2% decline in intermodal units.
