International stocks trading in New York closed lower on Wednesday.

The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts fell 0.47% to 144.86. The European index decreased 0.26% to 145.01, the Asian index dropped 0.87% to 148.78, the Latin American index fell 0.87% to 210.35 and the emerging markets index declined 1.25% to 248.91. ASML Holding NV (ASML, ASML.AE) was among the companies with ADRs that traded actively.

ADRs of ASML Holding NV (ASML, ASML.AE) rose 3.5% to $106.68 after the Dutch semiconductor-equipment maker reported higher-than-expected earnings for the second quarter as demand from chip makers remained strong.

Oil prices sank to a fresh three-month low Wednesday on concerns that the global glut of crude oil is being processed into a glut of refined products. Among decliners, Total SA (TOT, FP.FR) dropped 1.5% to $49.19, Statoil ASA (STO, STL.OS) fell 1.9% to $16.99 and Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA, RDSA.LN) decreased 1.2% to $56.97.

Barclays PLC (BCS, BARC.LN) Deputy Chairman Michael Rake is set to leave the bank by the end of the year, after being named chairman of payments company Worldpay. Mr. Rake's decision to step away from Barclays after a seven year tenure on its board marks another high-level departure for the British bank. ADRs edged up 0.8% to $17.35.

BHP Billiton expects to write down its U.S. onshore petroleum business by roughly $2 billion aftertax. Most of the charge relates to its gas-focused Hawkville field, acquired as part of its $12 billion takeover of Petrohawk Energy. ADRs of BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP, BHP.AU) fell 1.7% to $39.29 and BHP Billiton PLC (BBL, BLT.LN) edged down 0.78% to $38.33.

Sanofi SA (SNY, SAN.FR) unveiled plans for a new corporate structure that the France-based pharmaceuticals company said would make it more efficient and optimize growth, as the company's new chief executive puts his stamp on the business. Sanofi didn't say if the changes, set to be implemented early next year, will lead to any staff cuts or how much would be saved. Sanofi ADRs eased 0.7% to $52.99.
