Amazon to Open Two New Fulfillment Centers, Create 2,000 Jobs

Amazon.com Inc. said Wednesday it would create 2,000 jobs in New Jersey by opening two fulfillment centers in the state, as the company seeks to broaden its logistics network amid increasing demand.

Akash Chauhan, Amazon's vice president of North America fulfillment operations, said in a news release that the company generally places fulfillment centers close to consumers to provide faster delivery times, and that the move was tied to climbing customer demand.

Amazon will open new sites in Florence, with an 800,000 square-foot facility and about 1,500 employees, and in Carteret, with a 600,000 square-foot center with about 500 employees.

The company currently has 5,500 full-time jobs in New Jersey, with 500 associates at a center in Carteret.

Amazon has identified companies that provide fulfillment and logistics services for themselves or for third parties as competition, and the company has begun building a logistics network that includes employee couriers completing the so-called last mile of a package's journey to customers' homes. It is also developing unmanned drones for package delivery.
