SYDNEY--Amazon Web Services, Amazon.com Inc.'s cloud computing platform, said it is expanding in Australia to better serve customers.
The company said it is launching a new infrastructure region--the AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region--which will provide its customers with more options to run workloads and securely store data in the country.
Amazon Web Services said it would invest $4.5 billion, or about 6.8 billion Australian dollars, in Australia by 2037 through the new region. It adds to the company's footprint in Australia, where it launched the AWS Asia Pacific (Sydney) Region in 2012.
"Australia has a strong history of technical innovation," said Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of infrastructure services at Amazon Web Services. "The launch of a second AWS region in Australia provides even greater resilience and enables more customers to develop cloud-based applications that help fuel economic development across the country."
The company added that an economic impact study found that its projected spending on the construction and operation of the new region will support more than 2,500 full-time jobs at external businesses annually.
