United Continental Holdings Inc.'s (UAL) United Airlines said it plans to equip its flight attendants with Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPhone 6 Plus, the latest step as the airline moves away from heavy paper manuals.
The phones, which initially will allow flight attendants to access the company's intranet and process most onboard sales, will eventually allow them to access safety manuals and report and check on aircraft cabin issues and repairs, company officials said.
Chicago-based United had previously equipped pilots with iPads and said it has renewed that program with iPad Air 2. Several airlines made that move last year and estimated significant fuel savings as a result of the lighter loads.
The iPhones will be distributed in the second quarter.
The company's stock, which on Wednesday set a 52-week-high trading at $66.35, is up 71% for the year.
