05/9/2003 08:25 | From Futures and Commodity Market News: Sep 02, 2003 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- ITU Telecom World 2003, Geneva, stand number 2261, UK Pavilion -- A recurrent issue for telecom carriers planning the rollout of broadband services over existing copper subscriber lines is the high infrastructure costs of the DSLAM equipment needed in each local exchange. This can make it uneconomic for a carrier to launch broadband services until customer demand in a certain exchange area reaches a critical mass. The result is broadband 'black spots', disappointed would-be broadband customers, and missed revenues for the carrier. Telspec, the UK-based independent telecommunications company, is launching at Telecom World a family of Digital Subscriber Line systems aimed at overcoming this problem, and making it economic for carriers to launch broadband-over-coppe The company's TelMax family of Digital Subscriber Line systems has a much lower entry price than a traditional DSLAM - in most cases the starting cost is just ten per cent of a DSLAM cost. TelMax systems are scaleable, so they can keep pace with growing market demand for broadband simply by adding new shelves and circuit cards. "The TelMax family of systems has altered the economics of broadband introduction," says Magnus Braxell, CEO of Telspec. "It allows carriers to launch broadband services more evenly across the network, even where demand is relatively low. "It's a very fast and cost-effective way for a carrier to roll out broadband, whether as a way of addressing broadband 'black spots', or simply getting started with broadband services in national networks where there is not yet established ADSL infrastructure. And, of course, the low entry cost coupled with the revenue-earning potential of higher-bandwidth services combine to give very short payback periods." The TelMax system architecture has been designed to provide a high degree of interchangeability, allowing different types of DSL technology to be applied to different subscriber lines, simply by using different cards in the equipment shelf. DSL services currently available in the TelMax system include: ADSL; g.SHDSL; VPNs; Lan Extension Services; IPVPNs; E1 Extenders; POTS; ISDN and Pair Gain. Summary of the new TelMax products being launched at Geneva TelMax IP: Multiple PSTN (POTS) Services up to 768Kbps always-on Internet access The TelMax IP system enhances an existing copper pair to give a subscriber multiple analog telephone (POTS) lines and an 'always-on' Ethernet bridge between the customer premises and the central office equipment at data rates up to 768kbps. Extender range (5.5km) is achievable with repeaters. TelMax IP is a cost-effective solution for SOHO/SME customers requiring multiple POTS lines in addition to VPN. Telmax A: POTS plus always-on internet TelMax A uses Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology to provide subscribers simultaneous telephony and an always-on data connection of up to 8Mbit/s. TelMax X: Single, Dual or Quad Pair g.shdsl systems TelMax X uses g.SHDSL (Symmetric High-speed DSL) technology to provide up to 2.3Mbps bandwidth over long distances, main applications are for VPN and leased lines. E1, Ethernet, X.21 and V.35 interface options are available. Two other new access systems being launched at Geneva, but not part of the TelMax family are: TelEFM: Fibre-quality without the fibre TelEFM is an Ethernet in the First Mile solution that 'bonds' multiple copper pairs together to offer up to 67Mbps fibre-quality transmission rates. Typical applications include Transparent LAN services, Broadcast Video, DSLAM backhaul, Storage Applications and Metro Ethernet Extension. TelMedia: carrier-class VDSL system for streetside use TelMedia is a carrier-class system using VDSL technology to provide a bandwidth of up to 70Mbps downstream and 30Mbps upstream over short distances up to 1.5km. Designed for installation in either street cabinet or pole top, the equipment is designed to meet harsh environmental specifications. A TelMedia system can also be installed in a building, for multi-tenant applications. About Telspec Telspec will be exibiting at ITU Telecom World 2003, Geneva, stand number 2261, UK Pavillion.
