More than 2,700 consumer-technology exhibitors have gathered in Las Vegas this week to tout the latest consumer-electronics products. The 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show, the industry's largest trade show, runs through Sunday.
Here are some of the products unveiled and major announcements made by publicly traded companies late Thursday and Friday:
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) announced plans to build a supercomputer to process and electronically distribute games and other complex content to users. The company said the computer is designed to process a million compute threads across more than 1,000 graphics processors, making it the fastest graphics supercomputer ever. The computer will use software developed by privately held Otoy, which develops software and special effects for movie studios and game developers.
AMD said the goal is make make high-definition, so-called cloud computing a reality. The system is designed to enable content providers to deliver video games, personal-computer applications and other graphically intensive applications through the Internet "cloud" to virtually any type of mobile device with a Web browser. AMD plans to have the system ready by the second half of 2009
AMD will also release its ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series notebook-graphics processor, a series that brings gaming and multimedia graphics capabilities from desktops to notebooks. The processor supports Microsoft DirectX 10.1 games and HD multimedia, as well as energy-efficient features for battery life.
CinemaNow, a unit of Sonic Solutions (SNIC), said Prodea Systems will use its CinemaNow platform in its Digital Life Command Center product. CinemaNow's platform will enable Prodea to offer so-called Quality of Service guarantees, and integrate and deploy movie sell-through and rental store services in their devices.
Separately, Sonic also announced it is providing entertainment delivery services for a new array of connected consumer-electronic devices and digital home platforms, such as Blu-Ray disc players and game consoles.
Cyberlink Corp (5203.TW) -- The company is teaming with Elo TouchSystems, a Tyco Electronics Ltd. (TEL) unit, NextWindow and N-trig to develop multi-touch optimized systems for PCs. With NextWindow, the company is working on technology for the All-in-One PC platform. Their latest multi-touch PC collaboration enhances photo, video and music capabilities.
Ford Motor Co. (F) -- The auto maker, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), and eight partner companies together introduced the latest new features for SYNC -- the hands-free information and entertainment system for drivers. Ford also previewed the 2010 Fusion Hybrid, with a government mileage rating of 41 miles per gallon in the city and 36 on the highway.
Entropic Communications Inc. (ENTR) -- The company said the EN4020, its new multi-mode hybrid RF CMOS silicon tuner, has been selected by Topfield Co. (057880.KQ), a maker of DVR and set-top boxes for digital video receivers including DVB Systems for CATV and DVB-T. Topfield will incorporate Entropic's EN4020 silicon tuner in its next-generation set-top box design. The EN4020 has also been selected by Serit Platform Corp, which designs digital tuner modules.
Palm Inc. (PALM) unveiled a new smartphone, Pre; software for touchscreen smartphones, WebOS. The new software platform will be used to build smartphones that feature both a touch screen and full slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The first Palm phone to feature the new software and styling, Pre, will feature wireless-broadband connectivity, a 3 megapixel camera, 8 gigabytes of internal data storage and a 3.1-inch touchscreen. The phone will initially be available only from Sprint Nextel Corp. (S). Palm said the Pre is set to go on sale before June.
