International stocks trading in New York closed higher Tuesday, as the Bank of New York index of American depositary receipts added 0.6% to 152.06. The European index rose 0.6% to 149.86, the Asian index climbed 0.5% to 149.72, the Latin American index edged up 0.4% to 285.13 and the emerging markets index added 0.5% to 278.18.

Brazilian state-run energy giant Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR, PETR3.BR, PETR4.BR), or Petrobras, said late Monday that domestic crude-oil output dipped slightly in November, despite record production from massive new oil fields. Still, shares edged up 0.9% to $13.78.

Shares of European financial stocks posted gains, with Lloyds Banking Group PLC (LYG, LLOY.LN) rising 1.5% to $5.32, Barclays PLC (BCS, BARC.LN) up 0.8% to $18.13, Credit Suisse Group AG (CS, CSGN.VX) up 0.7% to $31.04 and UBS AG (UBS, UBSN.VX) up 0.6% to $19.25.

Although gold prices fell Tuesday, locking in the largest annual decline since 1981 and ending a 12-year bull run, South African gold miners ended the year on a positive note, with shares posting gains. Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI, GFI.JO) shares rose 2.9% to $3.20, Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HMY, HAR.JO) shares climbed 2% to $2.53, Drdgold Ltd. (DRD, DRD.JO) shares added 1.9% to $3.69, and AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (AU, ANG.JO) shares rose 1.6% to $11.72.
