Wierd isn't it, I bought last week and they look like they have great potential - I ISA'd mine. Been watching for a while but took me some time to find what looked like a dip, it has just risen from the low without a dip aside from a couple of 5p fall backs.

I'm hoping this is the start of another phase up.

I can't see what triggered that strong price rise this afternoon, no big delayed trades reported. Makes me wonder if it will be tipped in the press at the weekend and it got leaked to the mm's - Friday afternoon runs on stocks with no big trades always set my alert bells ringing.

Sold another 1/3 and rolled profits into DWM. Still believe in UMC med/long but can't resist taking some profits(45%)since buying at 178P only a month ago.

my main supplier ( GRP MS ) is a subsiduary of umc and they say business is good, however its the impact of 11th sept that has hammered this even though i recall an rns from umc stating that aerospace only represented 4% of its business. the employees of grp ms are miffed at the mo because they had share save schemes excercised at over £3. not my kind of share but i reckon its worth a lot more than present

I always post my buys and sales so that no-one can accuse me of inconsistencies, I have sold a third of my holding today. Only so that I could make an investment in Kenmare(KMR) and have made a good profit since buying UMC at 178P. I intend to hold the rest for the medium/longterm.

Spread's too big for me without any news giving reason for the price rise.

This could fall back again very easily, look at LGD!!

Don't play the MM's game.

Monday Shrewd Snapshot
Recovery is one of the themes for buyers again today with stake building in Umeco and Lorien and Jack Petchey pocketed profits from his Compco shareholding.

* Smaller companies expert Roger Whiteoak has followed in the footsteps of his shrewd colleague Brian Watson and lifted the Throgmorton investment trust's (THRG) stake in aerospace component and chemicals distributor Umeco (UMC).

Whiteoak bought 85,000 shares for Throgmorton investment trust, which takes its holding to 1.5 million or 6.2%.

At the end of last year, following a steep fall in the company's share price in the wake of the 11 September attacks, Watson's Framlington Innovative Growth investment trust (FIT) lifted its stake to 3.2%.

The company has experienced low demand on the aerospace side of its business since the US terror attacks rocked the industry.

Analysts predict earnings will drop by about 17% this year and more than 20% in 2003 but the dividend is expected to be maintained. This provides shareholders with a handy 5.7% yield while they wait for the company's fortunes to improve.

The shares are valued at 5.6 times last year's earnings and would look something of a bargain were there any assurance that this level of profitability was set to return any time in the near future.

The £52 million company also has a fair bit of debt on its books which could be a worry if profits really nose dived.

The shares closed up 5p at 217.5p today which reflects a fair gain on the 165p they struck at one point last year and this year's low of 172p. However, it is still a long way off the last year's 660p high.

Someone trying to put a brake on the buying? Could it possibly be MM's short, us punters never really know.

Just glad I lucked out at the 178P bottom buy. Nice weekly return, shame me first dip was at 208P, but I think these are a great med-longterm hold. They're nicely in my ISA.

PDT well done taking the ALH profits, you can't be too greedy when volatility/liquidity is ripe. I didn't get the top but I have no regrets taking such a great short-term profit selling ALH when I did. UMC are more stable/liquid and perhaps a greater following with a great grwoth story. Easily could return to 3GBP over the next year, 6GBP over 3years.

On another tack - is the spread always this wide - 210/230 isn't exactly tempting

Just spotted this one - like the look of the chart - 8 successive days of rises, approaching recent resistance without much more resistance once through there. Very tempted. AdvFN chart doesn't show it, but has just had a golden cross of 10/20 day EMA as well according to Sharescope charts. Got a buy signal from MACD very recently, and Stochastics a bit earlier - though RSI going towards overbought.

Shows up better on this chart:

I'm not following you but just sold some of my Alphyra and bought my first ever holding in this one.

I like the recent fund buying, director purchase and great results just announced from Rolls Royce. Nice divi yield.

The most serious buying yet today going through at 215P. Looks like I was lucky to top up at 178P days ago. This must be institutional buying at this level. Stand-by for the announcement of one of them increasing their holding, and then come the buy recommendations. Yippee.

Anyone following this one? Share price seems to have been battered after Sept 11th but seems to have recovered slightly since. Could be an interesting Buy if it starts heading back up to £5 from whre it fell from.
