30/4/2014 10:24 | By Géraldine Amiel PARIS-- Total SA Wednesday said its first-quarter earnings fell 10%, mostly due to lower production on the back of several major-project hurdles, as well as lower crude oil prices and higher exploration charges. "In all segments, our teams are working to translate our announced cost reduction commitment into tangible targets and are ready to participate in making the company more efficient," the Total Chairman and Chief Executive Christophe de Margerie said. The French company is in a tight race to find new oil reserves, notably to serve energy-hungry emerging markets in regions such as Asia. Yet, after years of substantial investments, Total has plans to boost its cash flow and cut costs, in the face of higher exploration charges. Some of its projects have yet to deliver. Beyond the cost-reduction plans, the group also decided to sell nonstrategic assets for $15 billion to $20 billion between 2013 and 2014. For the first quarter, Total's net profit, adjusted to exclude the effect of inventories and other nonrecurring items, dropped to $3.3 billion from $3.7 billion a year earlier. On a per-share basis, adjusted net profit fell to $1.46 from $1.63 a year earlier. Net profit for the period increased 71% to $3.33 billion from $1.95 billion a year earlier, mostly thanks to a favorable basis for comparison after a major depreciation on some Canadian assets in the first quarter of 2013. Total's hydrocarbon production fell 6% to 2.179 million barrels of oil equivalent a day, or mboe/d, from 2,323 mboe/d a year earlier. The first quarter's performance marks the first production drop for the group in three consecutive quarters. The company had claimed its strategy to increase output was starting to bear fruit.
