                                  AGM STATEMENT



Thorntons PLC, the speciality retailer and manufacturer of high quality
chocolate, toffee and other sweet special foods, today holds its Annual General
Meeting in Derby.



At that meeting the Chairman, John Thornton, will be updating shareholders on
sales performance to mid-October, which covers the first 17 weeks of the current
financial year.



"At the time of publishing the annual report in early September, own shop like
for like sales were above last year in each of the first 9 weeks and by +6.8% in
total. Since then this general trend has continued and all other areas of the
business are, overall, in line with management expectations.



The first 17 weeks of this financial year represents approximately 20% of our
annual sales. The key selling period is over the Christmas season, and we have
strong product and advertising programmes planned throughout this period. A
further sales update will be given in January 2003."
