"Standard Life Aberdeen PLC said on Thursday good progress has been made in talks with shareholders following dissent over remuneration.

During May's annual general meeting, some 42% of voting shareholders had rejected the approval of the investment manager's remuneration report.

In September, the Edinburgh-based firm appointed Jonathan Asquith as a non-executive and chair of the remuneration committee, and since then, the former Schroders PLC finance chief has been meeting with shareholders.

He has had 11 meetings so far, Standard Life Aberdeen said, with another five scheduled before the end of 2019.

Points covered include the issue leading some shareholders to reject the remuneration report, which were agreed to be one-off and unlikely to be repeated.

The main issue, Standard Life Aberdeen said in May, was a sign-on bonus for then-incoming Chief Financial Officer Stephanie Bruce.

Following talks with shareholders, Standard Life Aberdeen applied performance conditions to the sign-on bonus for Bruce.

"The reason we made this award was to allow us to attract a talented senior executive from outside of the investment management industry who was previously remunerated on a comparatively consistent annual reward package, without the significant deferral arrangements we apply," said the firm in May.

"The consultation meetings are proving valuable and positive.

As well as the issues noted, they are providing a useful opportunity to explore other features of the company's current remuneration structure and remuneration strategy in general," said Standard Life Aberdeen on Thursday.

"To ensure the company continues to respond to the views of shareholders on remuneration matters, Jonathan will bring the outputs from the current meetings to the next meeting of the remuneration committee in early December."

"They will also form a key part of the committee's continuing discussions on both the future approach to executive director remuneration and wider remuneration philosophy and practices across the company," it continued.

Shares were 1.0% higher on Thursday morning in London at 311.50 pence each."

Buybacks must be completed by mid Jan 2020 but I suspect that it may finish earlier then that. Anybody have a handle on timing?

This link: hxxps://www.investopedia.com/articles/stocks/10/share-buybacks.asp

provides an understandable explanation of share buy-backs, both the positive aspects and the negative aspects.

Your rudeness detracts from your presumed knowledge Pierre. It's unnecessary. Nothing in investment is obvious, many things are complex and much is convoluted.

My view is there will be the usual partial movements, summed up to make the actual sla move. There will be the general market move, superimposed with the insurance sector move, and superimposed on that the unique circumstances moves which only sla will feel. What will be missing, unless restarted, is the partial positive move due to share buybacks.

If the prices overall goes down, it doesn't mean the partial move due to every factor is down, as we have seen recently. Obviously - isn't it? - the partial move due to buybacks is always positive. Sorry to state the bleedin obvious, but some things bleedin obvious to some are incredible complex and convoluted to others.

So basically, the price may go up or down or possibly stay the same depending on the sum of all the partial moves. If anyone claims to know where it's heading then i assume they'll be multi millionaires in a few days or weeks.

It will be interesting to see how the share performs thereafter. Will it follow market sentiment (either up or down) or languish as a result of the lack of a firm buyer?

Citigroup will have profited however. Buy their shares C.I. :-)

August 2019

"Standard Life Aberdeen PLC confirmed Friday it has asked US bank Citigroup to conduct the remaining GBP200 million in the investment management company's GBP750 million buyback programme.

Citi will begin purchasing shares Friday and will have until January 16, 2020 to complete the programme.

At SLA's 2018 annual general meeting, shareholders approved a GBP1.75 billion total buyback programme.

This consisted of GBP1.00 billion returned through a B share consolidation scheme agreement - which was completed last October - and the return of up to GBP750 million through an ordinary share purchase agreement.

SLA has already purchased GBP550 million of shares through the agreement, with the final GBP200 million now expected to be bought by January 2020.

The company said the purpose of the programme is to reduce its share capital.

SLA currently has 2.41 billion shares in issue."

Yes, almost back to the point where the buy-back started and that does seem an awful long time ago.It makes you wonder if it really was worth it.

yep, plenty of 6-7% dividend yields to enjoy out there... and the decent but out-of-favour larger cap stocks mostly recover over time

I agree with P.O. that SLA have indeed paid very good dividend yields since the float in July 2006. Looking at other FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 companies who also pay (better) yields the pattern of late seems to be the declining value of the underlying share is the driving force behind the high yield.

Thanks to dividenddata.co.uk I was able to check the historical payments.

It seems to me that providing you purchase at a low point and, to some extent, ignore the possibility of a further depreciation in your investment, a high yielding share is better not only than a bank account but probably also much better than purchasing an annuity. Such an instrument denies you access and ownership of the entire capital lump sum anyway. Place that investment in an ISA wrapper and you've got tax-free income from the dividends.

Looking at the wider market re. divi's leads me to believe that our market is underpriced as so many companies are yielding higher than normal. I wonder if, after the Dec 12 election and possibly, an exit from the EU shortly thereafter, if the market will correct upwards very quickly.

320+ C.I. ?

Well I'm very happy I bought some years ago, and was given a load some years ago. Sure, inflation has eaten into the share price, as it eats into every price, and also the income on the income. But the income is still very high compared to a bank account. As long as you're on the right side of SLA, that is, the owner side and redo not the customer side, you'll do very well if you invest. If you gamble short term you could of course lose, like most gamblers do.
