MINDER'S comeback did the business for Five when it launched on Wednesday night.

The new version of the classic 80s show, with ex-EastEnder Shane Richie as Archie Daley, peaked at 2.7million in its first episode.


This was higher than Five's usual rating for the 9pm slot, which averaged 1.1million last year.


But all other terrestrial channels got more viewers - with the FA Cup match between Liverpool and Everton getting the most.


In Five's remake Lex Shrapnel, 29, plays Archie's sidekick Jamie, a copy of Dennis Waterman's role as Terry. Shane, 44, plays the original Arthur's nephew.


Last month George Cole, 83, who played Arthur, said he was furious at having no involvement.


He said: "Audiences remember Minder as me and Dennis but neither of us had any input."
