bookies don't pay a divi.

buy the maximum fear, to maximise the return.

this is why I've been in 90% cash for past few years.

Xmas is here.

I am still staying in cash. Markets too much like a casino. You would probably have better returns down the bookies

The yield will almost certainly be cut here imho ( and BP too )

Liabilities are way too high

Also Shell is paying a high price for BG

and BG has mega liabilities too

only tomorrows prices will confirm if you picked up a bargain today/ All bets are off in the long term for all shares. We're heading into unusual times, traditionally interest rates are lowered to stimulate the economy in a crash but that options not available. Its going to prove an interesting run till Christmas. Anyone agree with sub 4000 on the FTSE ?

Well I've just bought at sub 1600. Unbelievable. Nearly 7.5% dividend yield

One analyst saying oil per barrel will start with a 2, wow $28 a barrel.

The problem I have with those who say Shell have never cut the dividend is they forget that they have been increasing it in times of very high prices that we may never see or not see again for a very long time ie prices in excess of 100 dollars. It only stands to reason that taking some of this back has to happen at some time but a lower share price may make it relatively painless for those who have covered themselves if they bought high up to 2600 or buy in at current prices nearing to 1600 and maybe less. Refining margins - obviously some scope with cheaper crude and refining is an important part of what oil majors do but there are pure refiners too. Not easy to get figures on the percentage contribution to the profits of oil majors of refining and retailing?. The price at the pumps is substantially tax !

Hooley.
Fair comment. In theory if oil fell to $10,would Shell be still making a profit?

In the last 30 years oil prices fell to under $10 a barrel and still Shell held its divi. They haven't cut since WW2. They will almost certainly maintain the payout this time round. Just focus on the record and the cash flow generated.

Under extreme conditions to support the oil price meeting can be brought forward...

With this current yield, hopefully the dividend can be maintained.Of the high yielders in the Footsie 100,I just wonder how many of their dividends would be under threat of being cut.On the other hand are there companies which would hold their dividend come hell or high water?!
