Still trading nicely within the current sideways range. All looking good for an imminent breakout. (good top-up opportunity for those long termers).

This iceberg sell seems to be continuing from the end of last year. Maybe it will be complete by the end of the month.

Gold still frisky

SO the gold story is dead, is it? Tell that to the traders who pumped up by 140 per cent the stock in Metaliko Resources (MKO) on news it had bought the historic Bronzewing goldmine near Leinster, Western Australia -- the same mine that has brought undone two companies over the past six years: first View Resources and then Navigator Resources ended up in the hands of administrators.

It was the discovery of Bronzewing that made prospector Mark Creasy a very wealthy man after selling the ground to Joseph Gutnick's former Grand Central Mines. That company later sold out to the (also former) Normandy Group of Robert Champion de Crespigny. MKO plans to start drilling soon to prove up more gold.

Low-cost gold producers can still be appealing if Trent Barnett at Hartleys in Perth is right. He has a buy on Beadell Resources (BDR), whose total cash costs in Brazil this year are expected to be about $700 an ounce. December quarter production was less than expected but Barnett saw the bright side with his note's headline: "Slight production miss, still printing money though". He also cites the high risk-high reward exploration at Tropicana East in WA. Gold looked quite frisky on Friday, ending 1.55 per cent ahead at $US1249/oz.

Canaccord Genuity's Warwick Grigor told clients on Friday he had a report from Anglo-Far East Group, which, among other things, stores gold and runs a gold fund. Its chief strategist had just been to Switzerland and reported:

lThe largest gold refinery in Switzerland doubled capacity last year and was still needing to operate 24 hours a day to meet demand.

lSeveral times last year this refinery was unable to source gold. That had never happened before.

lSometimes when gold comes in, it is marked with delivery dates in the 1960s (which tells you something about how much new gold is not around).

Grigor's take: "The conclusion is simple. There is a squeeze on the gold market that is imminent. Futures markets are being used to suppress the minds of traders while at the same time every spare ounce is being tucked away."

Much of that in China, one presumes.

Good volume so far today. Production RNS imminent and presentation on the 30th. I doubt these prices will be here for long.

"Having consolidated for around 6 mths, such a breakaway could occur at anytime. (an 'underlying uptrend' appears to be developing, and if this holds, this will lift the price to a breakout during the next couple of weeks)."

- posted by fingers on the 1st Jan.

It would be nice to see the breakout prior to the presentation or production RNS to give another opportunity for a more sustained rally.

Grade is the key in this current market and Serabi have fantastic grades with Palito. When Soa Chico comes into production later this company will really show its worth.
