At DFS in the RNS statement announcing the CFO leaving....

...is this trading update which should have positive read across:-

Further to recent our Trading update and the successful completion of expected deliveries to our customers prior to year-end we now expect profitability to be in the upper half of the range for underlying profit before tax and brand amortisation previously indicated.*

There are fewer shares now too.

Support broken. Now surely back down to March 2020 levels.

The share buyback will probably last for nearly a year at the rate they have set to buy them each day.

Their percentage increase from 4.98% to the notifiable 5.00% could have been triggered by the share buy backs... less shares in circulalation so they now have a larger % share (by 0.02%). So possibly no actual change on their actual holding.

Interesting. Bottom held again. Taken together with the double top in 21, this looks like a confirmed triple bottom. If they have the firepower to continue buying at these prices while paying a remarkable dividend, something surely has to give..?

"In addition to this notification, there was a missed notification when the holding reduced from 5.1% to 4.98% in July 2020."

Looks like they increased from 4.98% to 5%.

Stadium Capital Management LLC are a Hedge Fund by the look of it. Perhaps the cash pile here is being appreciated?

Big down day on the markets: SCS one of only four in folio (CSN, VOD, WEN) that held their own.

Once again, bottom confirmed, or at least strengthened. And company bought further shares yesterday as per RNS.

Some commentary on DFS from PS on Stocko this morning. Of which, apposite to SCS he says the following:

"Guidance on debt - I feel DFS operates on a reckless basis, having spent all the customer deposits, and paying out special divis & buybacks, funded by debt. The contrast between DFS (reckless, weak balance sheet), and SCS (which hoards cash) couldn’t be starker. I did a video explaining this & comparing SCS vs DFS last year, but can't find the link.

DFS is clearly a better business, but if the economy does fall off a cliff, then DFS might have to come back to the market for fresh equity, which is what happened during the pandemic, whereas SCS didn’t & won’t need an equity raise, due to its huge cash pile."

I'm with the cash hoarder.

I managed to find Paul Scott's comparative piece on DFS/SCS on Stocko from 5/12/21. He linked it to an interesting googledoc - here- showing the different approaches to cash:

His comment, perhaps prescient, was:

"My opinion - the risk has definitely increased since the last update (although SCS is still trading in line with current year market expectations).

A sharp slowdown in order intake in the last 7 weeks could just be things normalising (after a previous surge in pent-up demand). Or, there's a risk it could be a more enduring downturn, we just don't know at this stage.

Also, I am a bit concerned that the order book has continued growing, which means there's an increasing backlog of manufacturing & deliveries, that the company will have to work its way through by 31 July 2022 year end. That could mean poor interim results to end Jan 2022.

Hence I suspect we could have short term volatility, but personally I invest long-term, and reckon the current price could be locking in a near-10% dividend yield (plus special divis/ more buybacks) once conditions normalise. Plus the possibility of a takeover bid. Hence overall, I've got no idea what the share price is likely to do in the short term (same with everything!), but for me the medium term fundamentals look very attractive."

MRF, whose problems run deeper - DFC or SCS?
I'm watching the chart with interest, as 1.50 looks like becoming a big test level.

Increasingly suggestive of a bottom, with high paying dividend to collect. Do we not think?
