European stocks head for lower open as investors focus on central bank meetings, data

London’s FTSE is seen opening 8 points lower at 6,025, Germany’s DAX down 36 points at 13,165, France’s CAC 40 down 11 points at 5,044 and Italy’s FTSE MIB 26 points lower at 19,745, according to IG.

JSJ was good for shareholders in Rio - he changed the culture to focus on shareholders' returns rather than empire building.

However.......... blowing up those caves was monumentally stupid. I'm no tree hugger but I was appalled by the insensitivity and loss of a people's (and world) heritage.

European markets head for flat open with Brexit standoff in focus

Key Points

The EU on Thursday urged the U.K. to abandon its plan to renege on the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement and threatened legal action, but U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government has vowed to press ahead with its Internal Market Bill.

European markets are set for a muted open Friday as investors monitor tense negotiations between the U.K. and the European Union.

Britain’s FTSE 100 is seen unchanged at 6,003, Germany’s DAX is set to open around 2 points lower to 5,022 and France’s CAC 40 is expected to inch around 4 points lower to 5,020, according to IG data.

Rio Tinto PLC said Thursday that it and Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. have entered a memorandum of understanding to provide funding for its Mongolian copper project, and will seek up to $500 million.

The mining giant said the memorandum will progress the completion of the Oyu Tolgoi Underground Project in Mongolia, set to be one of the largest copper mines in the world. It will re-profile principal debt repayments with lenders under existing project finance arrangements into ones that better match with the revised mine plans, and raise up to $500 million in additional lending from certain international financiers, it said.

Turquoise Hill will continue to explore other options for additional funding, which Rio will consider, the company said. However, Rio said it doesn't presently support or consent to any additional debt or other sources of funding, and both parties acknowledge any balance of funding will need to be met through a Turquoise Hill equity offering.

Key Points

London’s FTSE is expected to open 16 points lower at 5,997, Germany’s DAX up 16 points at 13,253, France’s CAC 40 up 4 points at 5,947 and Italy’s FTSE MIB 20 points lower at 19,751, according to IG.

The ECB’s latest interest rate and monetary policy decision is due today.
