Bit of a delayed reaction to today's news, but share price seems to be taking off nicely now (up 12.7% currently).

I got on board following quite a bit of Investors Chronicle coverage.

From the credit Suisse report:

"Although medical research is yet to prove conclusively that sugar is in fact the leading cause of obesity, diabetes type II or metabolic syndrome, we compare and contrast various studies on its metabolic effects and nutritional impact. Alongside this, we question some of the accepted wisdom as to what is perceived as "good" and "bad" when it comes to sugar consumption, namely as to whether a calorie consumed is the same regardless of where it is derived from – sugar, fats, or protein – and whether solid foods are "nutritionally different" to liquids.

Naturally, recent focus here – medical, media and regulatory – has intensified on certain products, with soft drinks being the common denominator for all three. Within the population, we are already seeing a gradual reduction in the consumption of sugar and a switch to an alternative "diet" or "low-fat" products, particularly among the most highly educated. Demands for regulation, or taxation to limit consumption, are growing. Yet governments and health officials have so far taken a mixed stance on the matter.

The potential for a surge in negative public opinion and the looming threat of regulation and taxation are issues that the food and beverage industry clearly must address, though the extent to which they can do so without hurting their current business models is up for question. A diversification into new healthier products is gathering momentum. Change will bring new investment opportunities with clear winners and losers.

What can we expect in the future? What should investors focus on? Although a major consumer shift away from sugar and high-fructose corn syrup may be some years away, and outright taxation and regulation a delicate process, there is now a trend developing. From the expansion of "high-intensity" natural sweeteners to an increase in social responsibility messages from the beverage manufacturers, we see green shoots for dietary changes and social health advancement. Ultimately, we expect consumers, doctors, manufacturers and legislators to all play a crucial role in changing the status quo for sugar."

There are 3 companies, each doing a 30 min presentation: PureCircle (PURE), Vislink (VLK), Cranswick (CWK).

It's a good venue, very central, and they are interesting events, good for meeting companies & chatting to other investors afterwards.

We are pleased to invite you to our next Investor Forum, on the evening of Wednesday 26th June, to meet the senior management of PureCircle, Vislink and Cranswick.

PureCircle (PURE)

There is significant and growing attention globally on combating obesity, with leading food and drinks' manufacturers launching or remaking products with significantly fewer, or zero, calories, eg the Sprite brand of Coco Cola. PureCircle is the world's leading producer of high purity ingredients derived from the stevia plant, and leading the global expansion of stevia as the next mass volume natural sweetener.

William Mitchell, Finance Director, will outline the scale of this opportunity.

Stevia article mentioning Purecircle that popped up on a radio stations website. Nothing really of interest for investors (except the slightly worrying talk of 'adaption' near the end) but good to know people are talking about Stevia.

indeed, this is massive news....EU approval....by my reckoning we should be heading well north of the current share price...be very interesting to see holdings change as institutional investors come on board...broker update to come no doubt will have a significantly higher target price imo..

I listened to their investor conference presentation this afternoon.
Two main points came out of the presentation
- they are geared for global growth
- just a matter of time before sales go up dramatically, particularly if they get EU approval for Stevia products in November 2011, as stated.

Presentation Link :

Share price has come down dramatically over last two years and investors have lost total confidence in this share.

I have been badly burned by this share before and very skeptical whether Management are telling the full story.

Its a high risk buy but I think the share price is near its bottom and should move quickly if they do get EU approval in November.

There were some large director buys at over 100p sometime ago. Share trading at 80p at the moment. Well worth adding it to the "risky" side of one's portfolio. [This is the time to buy this type of share when its "unloved" and well off the investor radar]

UK - Yes SC is a serial shorter and deramper. Probably still in Solomon Gold and currently in conversation with his bank manager.

These two JV's are indicative of where Pure are positioning themselves for future growth. Basically leveraging the expertise of other well positioned sugar and ingredient companies to push the growth of stevia. Excellent move!

This share is being bashed by the markets at the moment as it consolidates its new strategy from one main distributor to end market supply / JV's. Obviously its profitability was going to be affected and thus its share price. The markets are still not convinced its new strategy will work and be cost effective enough to generate good profits. But I believe that as soon as Pure gets EU approval its price should move up fast. Investors may have to wait until sometime in 2011 for this to happen.

Is 165p a good entry / top up point? I dont know, but am reasonably confident based on my own conservative growth / profitability forecasts that the price will be around 300p this time next year, barring a huge market sell off.

SC will have disappeared off the scene long before then.
