cupasoup - Interesting isn't it...

Goals is far more bullish and the city laps it up... but Powerleague is twice the size and far cheaper and with more realistic growth plans....

I know which one I'd buy.... but the city laps up bullish growth and management talk...

The trouble with the PEG ratio is that it ignores the base and doesn't take into account growth sustainability... So it can be totally misleading and is only a rough and ready measure....

I.e. Goals could have EPS growth of 200% because it is coming from a low base and because it had one off costs in the previous year.... so the P/E may be high but the growth (the denominator i.e. PEG is P/E divided by growth) whacks the PEG ratio down to a miniscule figure...

However, is teh 200% sustainable... of course not...

Powerleague is by far the better bet in my view..... slap

This has been written up by Allnewissues.com and the Investors Chronicle. Both arguing it is a buy - the former at the issue price of 44p and the latter after the finals when the price was 66p. Also tipped by Small Company Share Watch as one of their 06 naps. So should be interesting.

Looking at it now your first question might be why should I buy something so highly rated? Firstly as the rating falls to about 17 times in 06 then about 12 times in 07. So for the next calender year (from 1st January) the rating is only about 14.5 times. Secondly, the company appear to be conservative and would rather set achievable forecasts then ones that are difficult to meet. Thirdly, there is a strong asset backing.

The key, though, is obviously the story behind the stock. That is to roll out five-a-side football centers to major connurbations. Given the World Cup in 06 and how football crazy our country is these are almost guaranteed to be successful. Five pounds per person to be in a league team and then you can use the changing rooms and go the bar afterwards etc. There are also high barriers to entry given that it can take years to get planning permission to build one of these centers.

So there you go growth which should generate high returns on capital and which is protected by barriers to entry. A great growth stock. It may seem pricey but in six months it will be on a forward calander P/E of only 12. It should beat expectations and has great asset backing.

Lastly, remember the gym roll-outs of the 90s or the coffee shops. These were successful but suffered from satuaration and crashed in 2003 along with the rest of the stock market. Powerleague should be different given the barriers to entry but has the potential to be no less successful. Let us say they have 30 sites now why shouldn't they be able to have 90 when the market reaches maturity. Sounds like a concept stock - well less a concept then the gym/coffee shop roll outs as football has been around for ages and is immensely popular. So no lifestyle change requried here. Buy for low-risk growth and hold in my view.

dont just watch the movements in price... i play regularly at powerleage pitches and it is difficult to get a booking time! theyre always near capacity and this may be an indicator of good earnings in the near future

PWR seems much cheaper than GOAL.
PWR sales for y/e 2/7/05=£17.5m producing EBITDA=£6m
GOAL 6m/e 30/06/05=£5.5m producing EBITDA=£2.2m
PWR has 32 centres + sponsors
GOAL aiming for 26 centres by end of 20007 and 31 by end of 2008
Although how big is each centre?
PWR has three big named sponsors
PWR operating activities generated cash of £5m in the year.
GOAL operating activities generated cash of £2.4m in 6 months.
PWR Cap=£52m @63p
GOAL Cap=£71m @ 170p

However, are either cheap enough to buy? FT article in Nov. suggested that PWR could be subject to a private buy-out due to strong cash-flow. Also in Nov. one smallish director buy @ 64p

And yet recently GOAL share price has had the momentum.

chapman old chap... fancy doing a decent header with charts, news etc... and possibly some fundamental analysis... i.e. like the thing allnewissues did on this company... Also a photo of one of their centers would be good...

also anyone see that this was tipped in small company share watch...

Anyone got the writeup???????

With world cup in 06 I can't see how this can have a negative trading update in the next year at least... secondly, we should see the rating gap with goals close...

none of this necessarily makes the company cheap... I have it on a forward P/E of 17 times for 06.... (according to Investors Chronicle) so who knows how the shares will move??? And next update could be interims....

However, I can't see them going too far down from here as say a price of 50p would put it on a forward P/E of only 13.5 times... (unless there are some exceptionals in 06 forecasts providing a one-off boost which might be the case - i.e. property sales etc)...

According to a poster on the ELE board, SCSW(Small Company Share Watch)has PWR as one of their naps of 2006. Let's hope it has some effect on the price.
