Omega Diagnostics says lateral flow test detects Omicron

Omega Diagnostics (LON:ODX) said that it has been notified by its technology partner Mologic that its Mologic Covios Ag lateral flow test detects Omicron.

The AIM-listed company said that data from analysis on clinical samples, as well as in-silico analysis shows that the test performs with the same accuracy on the Omicron variant as it does with existing known variants.

This is the same test that is manufactured and sold for professional use by Omega as the VISITECT COVID-19 antigen test.

“We are very pleased to be in a position to confirm that the VISITECT COVID-19 antigen test is able to equally detect the Omicron variant, as well as other existing variants,” Omega Diagnostics Chief Executive Officer Colin King said in a statement. “We remain encouraged by emerging commercial opportunities for our VISITECT COVID-19 Antigen test that we expect to be unlocked following relevant approval under CTDA regulations and CE-marking for home-use.”

Yesterday, UK health secretary Sajid Javid said Omicron is set to become the dominant variant in London over the next 48 hours. The UK Health Secretary Agency (UKHSA) estimates that new Omicron infections are running at 200,000 per day, much higher than officially confirmed cases.

The total number of Omicron cases confirmed by genomic sequencing stood at about 4,700 on Monday but the UKHSA estimates those figures to be much higher based on its modelling.
