18/3/2011 14:31 | Friday, March 18 2011 Nuclear crisis will reinvigorate focus on renewables HSBC "We expect that nuclear's loss could be natural gas, energy efficiency and renewables' gain, as new and old generating capacity is replaced by other low-carbon forms of power generation and energy savings," the bank says. HSBC says that equity markets have responded in a "reasonable" way to the crisis, with European nuclear operators losing around 8% of their value while renewable stocks globally have risen between 10% and 15% on average. The bank says that the levelised cost of renewable energy, especially wind "could look more attractive in a post-Fukushima world." HSBC expects arise in CO2 prices, reflecting higher emissions from fossil fuel generation, as well as rises in gas and electricity prices. The levelised cost of nuclear power will also rise. "Increased reticence about nuclear's potential as a viable low-carbon option for power generation will be positive for gas and renewables on the supply side, and underpin efforts to improve efficiency on the demand side," HSBC says. Government's focus is likely to switch "towards safe, proven, secure and low-carbon forms of energy generation renewables and gas as well as measures to reduce demand through building regulations and transport efficiency standards," HSBC says. In the longer term, given gas' emission profile, there may be very few other competing technologies for renewables. HSBC says it continues to expect the clean energy market to triple during the next decade to $2.2tn, with renewable continuing to be added at a much higher rate than nuclear. New renewable energy capacity to reach 96GW per year, while nuclear will grow by around 16GW, HSBC predicts. | haroonm

18/3/2011 07:07 | Assalamu'alaikum.. FTSE FUTURES SHOWING UP 30 .............. should be a good start today.. jap index up with the g7 intervention..also shows how serious the situation was or is that they had to do that so decisively.. if the japs can get the reactor pumps working today then i think markets will rally a bit.. we should know this afternoon. a very good close for bao yesterday..as for sea im not really expecting a rns today, its the local/scottish gov approving the s.e.a/pas which will pave the way for them to sell the s.e.r.l division which i think they already have a buyer for. after the approval it only leaves the question of how much it goes for!! if all goes well then i expect the minimum would be £30million. but lets see if they get approval today. | haroonm
