fyi as the subtlety (is it that left-field ?) obviously needs explaining:

'risking their mortgages' is a metaphor for risking something of financial significance - which they haven't.

As against someone inventing something in a shed and re-mortgaging their house, which is their main asset, in order to get something they really believe in off the ground.

I hope that fully explains. Failing that, go back to A-level English, which oddly enough I didn't take as I'm a scientist. But hopefully a literate one.
